Salary vs. Dividend Optimisation in Hungary 2026

Optimisation strategies

Strategy 1: Minimum wage salary + high dividend

Many business owners take only the minimum wage as salary (HUF 322,800/month gross) and take remaining profits as dividends. Benefit: lower payroll costs. Downside: lower social security-based entitlements (pension, sick pay etc.).

Strategy 2: Szocho-cap optimisation

💰 Example: HUF 645,600/month salary + HUF 3M dividend

~HUF 7,266,864 net/year

A monthly gross salary of HUF 645,600 reaches the annual HUF 7,747,200 szocho cap. Above that, the HUF 3,000,000 dividend only carries 15% PIT = HUF 450,000. No szocho! Total net: nearly HUF 7.3M per year.

KIVA companies: different rules

If your company pays KIVA (small business tax), the optimisation follows different logic as KIVA replaces corporate tax and part of the szocho. In such cases, always consult your accountant to determine the optimal split.

Why does the salary-dividend ratio matter?

The owner-manager of a Hungarian limited company (kft.) can access the company's profit in two ways: as salary or as dividend. The two carry significantly different tax burdens, so finding the right ratio can save — or, if you choose poorly, cost — substantial amounts. The choice is not entirely free, because the law may prescribe a minimum salary, but there is room to manoeuvre above that.

Salary carries higher contributions and thus larger deductions overall, but it is a deductible cost that reduces the corporate tax base and builds pension entitlement. Dividend has a lower tax burden but can only be paid from after-tax profit and creates no social security entitlement. The right ratio depends on personal circumstances, income size, and long-term goals.

The tax burden of salary in 2026

Salary is subject to a 15% personal income tax and an 18.5% social security contribution for the employee, a total deduction of 33.5%. On top of this, the employer (the company) pays a 13% social contribution tax on the gross salary. Salary therefore bears a higher overall public burden, but in return it entitles the holder to full social security — pension, sick pay, and healthcare.

The advantage of salary is that it is an accountable cost for the company, reducing the base of the 9% corporate tax. For a profitable business, this is an important consideration: the company pays no corporate tax on the amount paid as salary, whereas dividend is paid from after-tax profit already burdened with the 9% corporate tax.

The taxation of dividends in 2026

Dividends are subject to a 15% personal income tax and a 13% social contribution tax. However, the social contribution tax has an upper limit: it must be paid only up to twenty-four times the minimum wage, so above a certain annual amount the dividend is burdened only by the 15% personal income tax. This ceiling makes dividends particularly attractive for higher-income owners.

In practice, this means that for larger dividends the effective tax burden can fall well below 28%, because above the ceiling only the income tax remains. This is why many owners combine a lower salary that meets the minimum requirement with taking profit as dividend — but they must always weigh the loss of pension and sick-pay entitlement.

Important: Dividends do not build pension entitlement. Someone living solely on dividends can expect a minimal pension in the long run. This long-term effect must always be weighed against short-term tax savings.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a mandatory minimum salary for the owner-manager?

If the manager performs their duties in an employment or corporate officer relationship, the contribution base must be at least the minimum wage (or guaranteed wage minimum). Certain cases of full-time corporate officer status are exceptions.

When is dividend more worthwhile?

Generally at higher incomes where the social contribution ceiling already applies, and where the owner does not derive pension entitlement from that relationship. For a precise decision, it is worth running specific calculations.

Can dividends be paid in a loss-making year?

No. Dividends may only be paid from positive after-tax profit or retained earnings from previous years, in compliance with accounting rules.

Worked calculation example

Consider an owner-manager whose company generates 12 million HUF of annual profit and who must decide how to withdraw it. Paying it all as salary would incur a 33.5% deduction plus the company's 13% social contribution tax, leaving a relatively low net income but full pension and sick-pay entitlement. Taking a minimum-level salary to maintain entitlements and the rest as dividend means the dividend is taxed at 15% income tax plus 13% social contribution up to the ceiling, above which only the 15% remains. For a 12 million profit, a well-chosen ratio can save several hundred thousand HUF a year — but always factor in that dividends do not increase the pension.
